I’ve read this cool article that predicts that the nature of work will witness 10 key changes through 2020. Organizations will need to plan for increasingly chaotic environments that are out of their direct control, and adaptation must involve adjusting to all 10 of the trends. You can read the whole article titles: “Gartner Says the World of Work Will Witness 10 Changes During the Next 10 Years” here.
But today I just want to share 5 and how it relates that it requires to develop your leadership and management skills by joining any youth organization. So, here it is, top 5 reasons your future career needs you to be a youth leader in university.
De-routinization of Work
The article says that the most value you can add are in-non routine work that involves uniquely human, analytical, critical thinking, creative and interactive contributions. You’re just plain labor if you contribute otherwise. All these require some skills & experience in using your brain. This means the more you use your brain doing student projects and etc, the better you are when using it in your career for bigger and better projects.
Working with the Collective
As specialization continues, teams become more complex and diverse. You need to be able to communicate to everyone on this team, regardless how hard it is to talk with these people who have different opinions and thinking styles. The keyword is communicational skills. That is why you need to take part in as much teams that involves as diverse members as possible. Don’t just join activities at your hostel only. Join university level activities too.
Work Sketch-Ups
As most routine jobs are done by computers, only new problems will be handles by people. And these are going to come a lot and they’re coming really fast. To solve these problems you need to make informal “sketch-ups,” created on the fly. To analyze, formulate and summarize the solution to the team requires an understanding of how people and processes work that can only be gain through experience. Being active in co-curricular is one such way to gain experience.
Spontaneous Work
As the company requires you to solve problems with short notice, you need to be spontaneous in doing your work. This situation requires to think on your feet and have the composure and calmness to handle it effectively. No matter how daunting it sounds, most student leaders have faced this before. The performers were late in coming for the event, rain started to ruin the sporting event, audio visual equipments failure and etc. These things will help them in their career, so why don’t you do the same thing too.
Dynamic Work Place
The work place is becoming more virtual. You don’t need to have an office and maybe you would have only skype meeting only. As work conditions become more flexible and convenient the line between working and personal life will blur. To maintain performance you need to be able to separate the two. Are you professional enough to separate the two? Start being professional by being active in student clubs and work together in teams with your friends. This is exactly what you will face in your future career.
Whatever you heard about working life form your parents, lecturers and seniors are outdated. IT is changing how we work, and you better prepare for it.
Be.You.
